About 18% of China’s population or 248 million people may have been infected with COVID19 from *December 120, 2022.The main variant spreading infections in China is BF.7, which is a sublineage of the Omicron variant BA.5 and has the strongest infection ability, a shorter incubation period, and a higher capacity to cause reinfection.

More than 37 million people in China may have been infected with COVID19 on a single day this week according to China’s National Health Commission (NHC).

This is higher than the previous figure of four million recorded in January this year, during the omicron wave.

More than half the residents of Sichuan province and Beijing have been infected. Ma Xiaowei, the head of the NHC said only those dying of from Covidinduced pneumonia will be counted as COVID deaths, excluding anyone with comorbidities who succumbs to the virus.

People in China have been using rapid antigen tests to detect infections as PCR booths have been shut down with the lifting of the lockdown on December 7th. The government has also stopped publishing the number of asymptomatic cases.

Chen Qin, chief economist at data consultancy MetroDataTech, predicts that China’s current wave will peak between midDecember and late January in most cities.

Meanwhile, the Indian government plans to introduce mandatory RTPCR testing specifically for passengers from China, Japan, South Korea and Thailand. A mandatory quarantine on arrival could also be reintroduced for those who test positive from these countries. After Gujarat and Odisha, the BF.7 variant has now been detected in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab respectively. 227 new cases and 2 deaths have been recorded on December 24th.
